Some Monday Morning Medicine

“My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.”

Psalm 62:7

If we are honest, I think we can agree: we are all searching - everyone of us.

We could name several objects of our common quest. Two things come to mind today. First, I believe all humans seek rescue; we long to find, or be found, by a kind of life we know we really can’t give to ourselves. Second, I believe we all seek recognition; we all want to be seen.

This ancient poem of David reminds me this Monday morning that the rescue and recognition I long for come from God. I know in today’s view that might make me old-fashioned, or out-of-date, but I believe - and have experienced! - that the salvation and honor I seek can only be found in an eternal, loving presence beyond me, beyond the material world of what I can touch and taste and see and hear and manufacture.

I am a man who is well acquainted with the searching. I’ve tried many things in this world to satiate my quest. But really, when I look at Jesus - in whom we most fully see the face of God - I realize that he has come to rescue me and give me the life I seek and that I am seen by Love. That is some good news for this Monday.
